It is made up of several towns and villages including some very unique infrastructure that has been built in recent times. One of such towns is the Tai O which is a popular fishing vicinity found in the north western part of the island.
It is well known that Tai O is one of the oldest towns in the country and is thought to be about three centuries old. For all those who visit Tai O, you will find a number of stilt houses even though many of them were destroyed by fire in July of 2000. You will come across the locally produced Chinese food like shrimp paste and salted fish in Tai O.
There are about six prisons located on Lantau Island and this includes the Tong Fuk centre found just west of the town of Tong Fuk. This one also takes about twenty minutes to get there.
You will discover that there are a wide range of tourist attractions found on the Lantau Island. One of such places is the Tung Chung Fort that was built in the year 1817 in order to stop the opium trade and also defend the coast from the threat of pirates. Hong Kong Disneyland is another great attraction on the Island. Indeed it is one of the beautiful scenes of the area and it is known that the Japanese occupied this fort during the World War II. Apart from this there is also the 85-foot high bronze Buddha statue which has a number of monastery buildings and a vegetarian restaurant attached.
